Artist Statement – Nguyen Thi Dung

 

With masterful hands and a deep understanding of clay and glaze, artisan Nguyen Thi Dung breathes life into raw earth — transforming it into sculptural ceramics that are profoundly personal and rich in cultural resonance.

She often prepares her own glazes — sometimes thick, sometimes delicate — creating surfaces where color shifts in depth and intensity. Firing in separate batches leads to unpredictable outcomes, and some collections take from the year’s beginning to its end to fully materialize.

The kiln is an untamed force. Fire transforms, resists, collaborates — but never submits. The alchemy of flame defies control, and each firing unveils a mystery: cracks in the glaze, shadows left by fire, and the quiet imprint of time. These imperfections are not flaws, but stories — silent signatures of process, patience, and presence.
